Join the Competition

Joining the competition is free of charge! However, any expenses incurred from the participation thereafter will be borne by the participant, e.g., expenses on experiment, travelling, accommodation, etc.*


1. Form your Team and register now ……

  • Each team shall consist of 1 to 3 student members from the same or different secondary school(s).
  • Each team shall have a supervising teacher (must) and may have an academic advisor from a higher education institution (optional) .
  • Endorsement from school is required.
  • A school may have more than one team participating in the competition and a teacher may lead more than one team. However, a student can ONLY be listed in one team in any subject category. That means it is possible for a student to participate in competition of multiple subject categories, but for each subject category the student can only be listed ONCE.
  • When you are ready, click here to register! Upon successful submission of the form, you must print out the registration email and seek stamp endorsement from your school(s).  Then you shall email the stamped registration email to yauaward@ashk.org.hk. The submission deadline of the endorsed registration email is 14 June 2019.  To facilitate your registration, we have provided a registration email sample for your reference. 
  • Once your team has been successfully registered, change of team members is normally NOT allowed.


2. Start preparing for ……

  • Research Outline : Each team shall submit a research outline (in English) by 30 June 2019.
  • Research Report : Each shortlisted team shall submit a research report, written in English or Chinese^ (an English abstract must be provided if you write your report in Chinese) by 8 September 2019.
  • Oral Defense : The oral defense (in English) will take place in November/December 2019.


Winning teams of YHSA(Asia) may be invited to make presentation in Mainland China to compete with finalists of the Mainland award. 


Submission of Research Outline


Research outline shall be submitted by 30 June 2019 to yauaward@ashk.org.hk. For file over 5MB, please instead send a download link to the above email address.


Format Requirement

  • in English
  • not more than two pages
  • in PDF format (A4 size)
  • in one single file (zip your files if you have attachments) 
  • file name must be “Registration Number-Research Outline”, e.g., “Math-001-Research Outline”
  • page margins set at a minimum of 2.5 cm
  • line spacing should be 1.5 lines or double (except for quotations, footnotes, references, captions, which may be single-spaced)


Content Requirement (not more than two A4 pages)

  • Names of team members and their school(s), country(ies)
  • Name of supervising teacher and his/her school, country
  • Name of academic advisor (if any) and his/her position, institution, country
  • Title of the project
  • Abstract of the project
  • Keywords
  • References


To facilitate your preparation of the research outline, we have provided a research outline template and a research outline sample for your reference.


Submission of Research Report


Competition teams whose research outline has been shortlisted to enter the second stage of the competition are required submit a research report, either in English or Chinese^ (an English abstract must be provided if you write your report in Chinese), by 8 September 2019 to yauaward@ashk.org.hk. For file over 5MB, please instead send a download link to the above email address.

  • Cover page showing : Names of team members and their school(s), country(ies) + Name of supervising teacher and his/her school, country + Name of academic advisor (if any) and his/her position, institution, country + Title of the report
  • Content pages including : Title of the report + Author(s) +  Abstract (less than one page) +  Keywords + Table of contents +  Contents (e.g., introduction to research background & existing research, research materials & approaches, conclusion, discussions, etc.)
  • References : References to existing research methods and conclusions must be indicated with clear citations. Common standard of academic integrity adopted by most journals or degree theses should be observed.
  • Acknowledgement indicating the assistance and contribution you have received for the project.


Other Requirements

Other supplementary documents as deemed applicable (e.g., experiment videos, relevant text/graphic materials, etc.)


 To facilitate your preparation of the research report, we have provided a research report template and a research report sample for your reference.   


Remarks: 


* Given the scale, geographic division and limited resources of the Award, YHSA(Asia) does NOT foresee providing any financial support to any competition teams to participate in any of the events/activities in general. However, YHSA(Asia) may provide up to 2 nights’ accommodation to students who reside in Asian countries other than Hong Kong, and have entered the third stage of assessment. Students who decline the accommodation arrangement of YHSA(Asia) will have to arrange for their own accommodation at their own expenses for the third stage of assessment.


^Since the Assessment Panels include international experts/scholars, YHSA(Asia) may arrange English translation for research reports submitted in Chinese for the assessment panels if deemed required. The English translation arranged by YHSA(Asia) shall be the final version to be submitted to the panel for assessment, and will NOT be subject to any review of the competition team.
